Develop Self Esteem

In another article I talked about low self esteem being the result of a fixed frame of mind that one has about themselves or some aspect of their life.

When we look we find this to be fundamentally true.

Our attention then moves over to overcoming or changing that fixed frame of mind so that we can Develop Self Esteem.

Over the years I have seen many attempts at doing just that, some successful, some not so.

In this article I want to give you a section from my self esteem course, "The Complete Self-esteem Workbook," which I hope will give you a little insight on how we go about actually changing a fixed frame of mind and thus allowing us to develop self esteem.

"………When we say a fixed frame of mind we are talking about something which seems quite impenetrable.

How could you change a fixed frame of mind with any sincerity?

Changing your mind is something which you have been told to do many times, and it is also something which you might have tried to do many times.

It works for a while but then you fall back into the old pattern of behaviour and thoughts.

The reason for that fall back is that a frame of mind is actually held in place by many thoughts and it takes more than one new thought to change it.

Self hypnosis tries to tackle this through taking the subconscious route. This is to some degree workable, but the subconscious mind is a very complex aspect of our makeup and can not be fooled so easily.

Positive thinking and affirmation takes a similar route, attempting to place many positive thoughts in place of the negative ones, again the process has some workability but is not the full solution.

Personal Revelation.

The breaking of a fixed frame of mind is actually a personal revelation.

It takes a personal revelation to change one.

To really change a fixed frame of mind it takes more than simply trying to change your mind about the situation you are in.

One could say "today I will not think about my problems."

The first thing that happens is that you start thinking about your problems. This approach seems to have the opposite effect.

A simple example of this is to ask someone to not think about cats. They must think about cats in order to not think about them (if you see what I mean) so that approach is never going to work.

It you have something "on your mind" trying to remove it or change it in that way can not work.

It takes a personal revelation, a personal realization about yourself which is a fundamental truth.

Do you recall the feeling you had when "the penny dropped," you might have been trying to do something, or understand something and then suddenly you got it.

At the moment you got it, all of the frustration, confusion, false notions and difficulty went out of the situation and you could see clearly the truth of the matter.

At that point we could say that you have a realization, a little personal revelation.

When that happened, the old considerations and thoughts that you had about the subject or thing you were working with vanished for good. Even if you wanted to you could not bring those old feeling back.

That is what we are going to do with your feelings of low self esteem, poor self image and lack of confidence.

We are not going to explain it away, we are not going to learn a trick of self hypnosis to control it and we are not going to tell ourselves that it does not exist.

We are going to bring you to a point of personal revelation about it, and at that point, as in our example above, it is gone for good.

Doing the Exerxises.

As you progress through the course you will be presented with a series of exercises. These exercises are designed to bring about a person revelation.

The following information is very important to the successful completion of the exercises and will give the framework for your progress.

A personal revelation is totally different to "figuring something out," or "understanding" something intellectually. It is a much deeper insight and has much greater power.

A man told my once that he understood why he lacked confidence in himself.

But he still lacked confidence in himself.

The "understanding" did him no good.

Someone told me that the physical universe was just an illusion; he had read all about it in Hindu texts and could quote it chapter and verse. But he had not had a personal realization about it. His understanding made no real difference to him.

I was doing a very esoteric exercise with someone, I asked them to "think a thought." Instead of simply doing what I asked, they tried to "figure out" what the likely outcome would be. In doing that they were not really doing what I had asked them.

The exercise carried on long enough will bring about a personal revelation of some magnitude. But the person did not get this revelation while she was tying to "figure out" what that revelation might be.

The revelation comes about through doing the exercises not through trying to "figure out" what the exercises will bring about.

I know that this might look like a fine line and even look like splitting hairs. But on one side of that line is an “understanding” and on the other side of it is a revelation.

The understanding and the figuring out will never cut through a fixed frame of mind, only a totally uninhibited personal revelation will do that………………"

This extract from the course "The Complete Self-esteem Workbook," tells us two things, It tells us that we can change a fixed frame of mind and that the way we do that is by bringing about a personal revelation. It also tells us that that is all we have to do.

We can change the situations of our lives endlessly, but we will take our fixed frames of mind with us.

A fixed frame of mind can be changed and it is a personal revelation when that happens.
