Although when you are in the depths of feelings of low self esteem, it might seem that there is no way out, many people have in fact overcome those feeling and managed to improve their self esteem and make a real difference to their own lives.
If we look at how to actually go about improving self esteem we have to first of all understand what self esteem is.
Self esteem is the attitude that we have about ourselves, it is an attitude which we have adopted and built as we have come through our lives.
An attitude is a fixed emotion and response to a particular subject or thing......and in the case of self esteem that "thing" is ourselves.
An important thing to look at is that an attitude...and attitude......does not necessarily have to be built upon any truth or even factual information.
Many people have a certain attitude toward certain types of food, music, automobiles etc etc. The attitude or stuck frame of mind actually prevents the person from actually looking at the thing which they have a negative attitude toward. As soon as the thing is mentioned or encountered......the same emotional responses click in and the person will actually say the same set series of words about that thing.
So the attitude or fixed frame of mind actually substitutes their ability to look or directly experience the thing that they are confronted with.
A surprising amount!
1. Low self esteem is a fixed frame of mind or attitude that you have towards yourself.
2. An attitude or fixed frame of mind prevents you from actually seeing the thing that the attitude is held towards and causes an "automatic response".
3. Though not actually looking at the thing (using the automatic response instead) no change if attitude is possible.
That might all look like a "no way out type of situation"........but think of this.
Jo hates bananas........he's never even tried one because they make him sick. Now, we could say, how does he know they make him sick if he's never had one.........and this is the point.....he has an automatic response, a fixed frame of mind or an attitude about bananas and that prevents him from trying one.
But that whole attitude is based upon NO DATA, no logical reason......and if we could actually get him to taste a little bit of a banana and if it did not make him sick and if he even found it to be okay.........his whole attitude would change at that point.
So in improving low self esteem....we could take the same approach.
While the attitude remains unchallenged it will remain in place and keep on spewing out the same old fixed frames of mind and fixed responses.
But if you could actually look at yourself without that fixed frame of mind and attitude you might see something in yourself which the fixed frame of mind and fixed response is prevention you from seeing right now.
So here is a line into improving self esteem.
Simply look beyond the fixed frame of mind, ignore the same old repetitive statements that you make about yourself and find just one thing that you feel good about........find something about yourself that you could admire.
That will be the first crack in that fixed attitude.
And as you find more and more things about yourself that you could admire your attitude will start to change and soon you will look back and see real improvement.
Improving self esteem has to start somewhere, and it does not start by saying the same old thing, thinking the same old thoughts or holding the same old attitudes.
Try something new...........find something about yourself that you could admire.
